The temporary rise of parasitemia caused by quinine during the initial stage of treatment of falciparum malaria is not widespread, but its true significance has not been known so far. Although initial stages of parasitemia are associated with the severity of malaria, the significance of the fluctuations in parasitemia within 24 hours of treatment on prognosis remains unclear. This study retrospectively analyzed the changes in the course of the disease in patients with severe falciparum malaria after treatment with quinine. It is known that the percentage of mature Plasmodium in peripheral blood affects the severity of malaria and thus the authors also studied the distribution of each stage of Plasmodium at the same time. 1988 January - 1993 March 5 years to a hospital in Paris, severe or complicated by malaria patients
