中国画特别是山水画很讲究韵律、节奏,也可以理解为动与静。“山本静也,水流则动。水本动也,入画则静。静存乎心,动在乎手。心不静则乏领悟之神;手不动,则短活波之机。动根乎静,静极则动,动斯活,活斯脱矣”。可见山体为静,水云为动;心为静,手为动。缺静则多浮躁,少动则缺活波之气。故作画应动静结合,在生活中寻找动静因素,在画中制造动静旋律,正如太极中的刚柔徐疾、虚实动静。
