Objective To investigate the role of IL-17 in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods Peripheral venous blood was collected from 23 patients with MS and 21 healthy volunteers. The levels of IL-17 mRNA in mononuclear cells were detected by RT-PCR. The levels of IL-17 in peripheral blood were measured by ELISA. Results The expression of IL-17 mRNA in MS group and healthy control group was consistent with the level of IL-17 in plasma (P> 0.05). Before treatment, the expression of IL-17 in peripheral blood of MS patients was significantly higher than that in healthy controls (P <0.01). After treatment, the expression of IL-17 in peripheral blood of MS patients decreased significantly (P <0.01), but still higher than that of healthy controls (P <0.01). Conclusion IL-17 may be involved in the pathogenesis of MS, the expression level is closely related with the disease.
