The non-random effect of radiation on tissue can be explained by the theory of target cells in tissue response. The theory provides a theoretical basis for clarifying the differences in the time of emergence and dose-response relationship. The bone marrow response is an example of a graded tissue reaction. The LD_(50) of human bone marrow is estimated to be between 2 and 5 Gy (the bone marrow dose). The lung is an example of a flexible tissue, and the LD_(50) of human lung is about 9.5 Gy (lung dose). The mechanism of tissue residual damage can be explained by the failure of the target cell population.
