This article presents an accurate, precise and rapid method for the determination of selenium in selenium-containing yeast and selenium nutritional supplements. Samples were suspended in an acidified emulsion of a mixed non-ionic surfactant prior to non-flame atomic absorption measurements using nickel as a matrix modifier to prevent selenium volatilization prior to atomization. This article points out the advantages of using a pyrolytic coated graphite tube with an average recovery of 101.6% and a relative standard deviation of 4.3%. It is suitable for analysis of selenium nutritional supplements ranging from 10 μg / unit to 50 μg / unit. This method is particularly suitable for high fat samples (more than 30% lipid). Ten commercial selenium supplements and seven selenium yeast were analyzed.
