湖光岩位于湛江市郊西南部,是60～100万年前火山喷发后形成的火山湖,这一带山清水秀,草木葱茏,是湛江市著名的风景区。此地处于热带北缘,属热带季雨林区,有较明显的旱、湿季.每年11月至翌年4月雨量较少,5～10月雨量较多,年平均降雨量1200～1750毫米。年平均气温高于23℃,极端最高温38.1℃,极端最低温2.8℃。最热月(7月)均温28.9℃,最冷月(1月)均温15.8℃。土壤是由玄武岩风化而成的棕色粘性砖红壤,土温高,肥力较强,pH值5.0左右。有由乔木、灌木和草本植物组织较为繁
