Taiwan’s history of Chinese drama researchers can be broadly divided into three generations. Its drama history is less disturbed by ideology and its academic tradition is better. It attaches great importance to mini-drama and popular literature, and its documentation and research have achieved fruitful results. Its absorption of western research methods and achievements is more consciously and directly than that of mainland China. Taiwan scholar is both a researcher of drama history, a contemporary playwright, a director or a stage supervisor. Such “amphibious” or “multi-habitat” is rare on the mainland. Taiwan academics also take precedence over the mainland in the protection, research and inheritance of local drama.
