“Have you learned any Chinese today?” has become a “top searched item” worldwide. With the rapid rise of China’s international status and its continuing endeavor to open up to the outside world, Chinese language, which is imbued with profound Chinese cultural connotations, has come into the global spotlight, and become an important language for international cultural exchanges.
Since 2004, China has been exploring the establishment of Confucius Institutes, a nonprofit overseas educational institution aimed at teaching the Chinese language and disseminating Chinese culture, referencing the experience of Britain, France, and Germany in promoting national phonetics. At present, 548 Confucius Institutes in 154 countries and regions around the globe leverage language as a medium and culture as a bridge to enhance understanding and friendship among people worldwide. They have made positive contributions to catalyze Chinese language to accelerate its move into the world, enhance the influence of Chinese phonetic culture, and build a culturally inclusive and harmonious human society.
