More than 25 million words of Dr. Zhang Lianguo’s doctoral dissertation, “Between Ideal and Reality: The Historical Fate of Chinese Liberal Intellectuals (1917-1937)” was published by Hongqi Publishing House in May 2005. This book reveals the rootlessness of liberalism in China by concretely and historically expounding on the historical fate of marginalization, conservatism and differentiation of Chinese liberal intellectuals from 1917 to 1937.
