This article shows the cases encountered by the Imperial Internal Trade System and the Modern World System through the comparative analysis of the border tea and Indian tea input into Tibet during the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. The dispute between border tea and printing and tea is essentially that the commodity trade in the modern world system challenges the luxury trade within the empire that maintains the level of frontier feudal hierarchy. While tea as a luxury reproduces the rank of Tibetan society, Indian tea, as a commodity produced by the modern world system, places the general public as its target group in an attempt to break the distinction between grades.
