Doris Lessing is a writer with a cross-cultural background. However, her educational experience and individual reading point out that her cultural psychological structure and spiritual pursuit are not beyond the Western tradition. Life in Africa inspired Lessing’s psychological gap and exclusionary reflections on cultural differences. In the African novels, she describes the clashes between different civilizations in “Trades ” and depicts the anxiety and even the cross-cultural failure in heterogeneous cultures. Lessing’s cultural and psychological sense of distance from Africa not only embodies what Said elaborates on the situation of the exiles, but also verifies on the contrary the complexity of the intercultural integration and intercommunication among different cultures.
