ObjectivernThe Badain Jaran Desert, located in western Inner Mongolia, is the second largest desert in China (Fig. 1a). It is well known for the coexistence of lakes and megadunes in the southeastern part of the desert (Fig. 1b). Previous research mainly focused on the paleoenvironmental evolution in the megadune–lake landscape in the hinterland of the desert, but research on its marginal areas remains limited. During recent 1:250000 hydrogeological mapping, we discovered paleoflood deposits on the southern margin of the desert. This provides new information for the further study of the hydrological conditions and environmental evolution in this arid region.
