In 2006, Donald Hall was selected as the “PoetLaureate” (“Poet Laureate”). Poet Laureate is considered the highest honor in American poetics. Hall was born in 1928. He studied at Harvard University, Oxford University and Stanford University. After graduating, he taught at Stanford University until 1975. He married his student and poet Jane Kane and became a freelancer after marriage. He lives with his wife in the New Hampshire Farmhouse left by his grandfather. When Kenya died of leukemia in 1995, his love and attachment to his wife and his thoughts on death became two of Hall’s most important poems. Affirmation, written after the publication of Without, is from The PaintedBed, another collection of poems by Hall. The content described in this poem is a summary and review of Without’s poetry. It is meaningful to read.
