In sixteenth-century France, the cele-bration of the new year started on March 25 and lasted until April 1. It was celebrated in much the same way as it is today with par-ties and dancing into the late hours of the night. Then in 1564, King Charles Ⅸchanged the New Years Day from March 25 to January 1. There were some people, however, who hadnt heard or didnt believe the change in the date, so they continued to celebrate New Years Day on April 1. Others played tricks on them and called them April fools.
