Macrophage regulatory function is mediated by its secretory products. There are 56 known mononuclear cytokines (ie, secreted products) today. Some of these are spontaneously secreted, such as lysozyme, colony-stimulating factor, and alpha-2-macroglobulin; most of them are secreted by the induction of certain factors. The authors propose grouping based on the mechanism of action of monocyte cytokines. 1. Products that exhibit a broad spectrum of regulatory actions: prostaglandins, cyclic nucleosides, promyelocytes; narrow-spectrum effects: colony-stimulating factors, other myeloid precursor proliferative and differentiation regulators, and interleukin-1 ( IL-1), other lymphocyte proliferation, differentiation and function regulators, cell proliferation, fibroblasts and other cellular functions
