Microbial erosion can lead to severe damage to concrete, leading in particular to the premature destruction of urban sewerage and treatment systems, necessitating early rehabilitation. Results from worldwide studies indicate that concrete in sewage and sewer sludge suffers severe damage from sulphates, acids, CO2 and the like. The process of bacterial and microbiological attack and destruction when concrete is in the environment conducive to bacterial growth and biodegradation is reviewed. In addition, the mechanism of sulfuric acid generation (sulfur cycle), the erosion damage mechanism of concrete for sewer system and agricultural industry, and the method of evaluating concrete resistance to microbial attack are also analyzed.
