I. Overview Japanese residential construction used to be dominated by wood structures. About 300 years ago, brick structures were introduced from China. After the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, reinforced concrete structures were introduced from Europe and the United States. Assembled reinforced concrete structures have only developed in the past decade or so. The reason why Japan adopts a fabricated structure is: 1. The urban population is concentrated and there is a lack of housing. By 1985, 27 million households would have to be built to meet the demand. 2. There are many steel products, cements, and construction machinery in Japan, and there are conditions for rapid industrialization of the building.
