从历史发展的全局来看,康熙、雍正、乾隆三朝在政治、经济、军事等各方面实力都堪称清代历史之最。在这辉煌的一百余年里,国家统一的最终完成、社会经济的高度繁荣、学术思想的集大成趋势使传统中国在明朝的基础上向前迈进了一大步,具备了前所未有的恢弘气派,故当时就有“正值太平盛世”之誉。然而,就是在这样一个国力强盛、海内升平的外部条件下,不仅才子佳人小说创作中充满着梦幻、低迷、伤感的悲剧意蕴,诗词、戏剧及其它类型小说创作领域亦涌现出大量的类似情况,形成普遍的悲观主义倾向。对这一互相悖逆现象的探索与研究有利于准确地描述康、乾时期文学创作原生态。
