This paper discusses modeling,simulation and control strategy of a novel 10kV transformerless static synchronous compensator based on a 15-level modular multilevel converter(M-STATCOM).The new shunt compensator,with the characteristics like modular design,high front-end flexibility,low generation of harmonics,etc.,is well suitable for medium or high-voltage utility grid without line-frequency transformers.Its topology,principle of operation under static var generating condition and control system are described comprehensively.Besides,a new corresponding control scheme called phase opposition disposition(POD) is proposed for fast compensation of reactive power and harmonics and for making the three-phase source side currents balanced.The results obtained from various simulated waveforms in the MATLAB / SIMULINK environment validate that the MSTATCOM is capable of reactive power compensation,harmonic cancellation and simultaneous load balancing.
