On July 14, workers started a partial strike at Korea’s fourth-largestautomaker, Ssangyong Motor, which is under the control of the Shanghai Auto- motive Industry Corporation (SAIC), pro- testing the management’s decision to lay off 554 workers and accusing its Chinese management of transferring core tech- nologies to its affiliates in China. Industry sources say the conflict at the nation’s fourth largest carmaker will last longer than that at other automakers, as the issues surrounding Ssangyong andSAIC are a lot more complicated. This time, Ssangyong workers are not demand- ing higher wages but job security and more investment by SAIC as it promised when the Chinese majority shareholder acquired a 49 percent stake in Ssangyong in late 2004. Ssangyong strike is just one challenges facing Chinese chief human officers. That is how to deal with overseas labor unit. The other nine challenges are: how to manage staff blog, weak culture in acquisition, staff health, human resources outsourcing, overseas managers, young staff born after 80s and how to deal with white collar strike, incentive staff after company stop quick growth and how to employ and keep foreign staff.
