鄱阳湖的显著特征之一是水位年变幅大达9—13m余,主要受附近长江水位的控制,它形成于全新世期,因海面及长江中下游水位的上升所致,至今才不过几千年。据湖区第四系钻孔剖面,分出了至少7个中更新世以来形成的湖沼相或河漫滩相夹层,将其与同时期世界海面曲线相比较,上述夹层与高海面在时代上相当,但高度上不完全对应,因湖区的第四系已遭受不同程度的侵蚀。
