当年刚主师在世的时候,曾经对我讲起他做《明末清初的学风》缘起,明清社会骤变中的文人士大夫们创立的学术风气,既是时代产物,亦为时代之导向,刚主师因此说:元末明初的学风,也不失一有趣的题目。他在《明清笔记谈丛》中谈及叶子奇《草木子》时,即已有所思,并引苏遇龙序云:“独怪草木子与郁离子(刘基)同郡、龙门子(宋濂)同时,而显晦迥别,天将各有以位焉。”当时我随先师初习明史,求于对明初制度的一知半解,尝试之而知实无成此研究之能力。先师殁后,为求发扬对其学术的传承,又将治学的方向转为晚明,对于明初的研究日渐荒疏,先师布置的题目,竟终未能完成。
