In the past, the work on the garnet structure has focused on the terminal element components of different solid solution series, especially on the Mg-Al 2 Si 3 O 12 and Ca 3 Al 2 Si 3 O 12, Little work has been done on garnet structures with a transitional composition. Novak and Gibbs (1971) studied many garnets, but most of their samples contain more than two divalent cations, making it impossible to deduce any useful result with respect to a single series of solid solutions.
