This study was conducted to observe the effect of electrical stimulation on the healing process of the injured avascular portions of the menisci of the knee. Twenty adult male dogs were used. Longitudinal incisions were made in the avascular portions of the lateral menisci of both knees. The animals were randomly divided into 2 groups. The experimental group received the electric current stimulation and the control group without. The results revealed healing of all the injured menisci under electric stimulation, while none of the tears of the menisci in the control group healed. Histological examination showed that at two and four weeks all the tears in the experimental group healed up partially and at the eighth week, the tears were completely filled up with granulation tissues. By the 12th week, the tears were healed up by fibrocartilage. The results suggest that direct microcurrent stimulation can induce cellular mitosis and proliferation. It increases vascularization and also promotes collagen synthesis.
