A membrane protein with a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) structure attached to its carboxy terminus, termed GPI-anchored protein, and a short GPI-anchored protein-specific phospholipase D (GPI-PL D) . GPI-PL D can specifically hydrolyze GPI, release anchoring protein and regulate anchoring protein expression and biological function. This article summarizes recent research on GPI-PL D, including its histological and organ origin, physiological functions, changes in activity under pathological conditions, molecular structure, and cloning of cDNAs
