Strange Stories from Liao Zhai was introduced to Japan during the middle of the Edo Period. Sinologists who wrote the transcripts were aware of the original text in Strange Tales of a Chinese Studio and translated their works. In modern Japan, “Strange Stairways in Liaozhai” gradually expanded from a handful of Sinologists in the Edo Period to more novelists, whom they read, loved and accepted. After the Meiji period, many translations and refutations occurred, which affected the works of Japanese modern writers. The transcribing writers came into contact with “Strange Tales of Liaozhai” through modern Japanese translation and were deeply attracted.
