拜上帝教在太平天国初期的斗争中,起到了相当大的积极作用,形成了洪秀全、杨秀清等人的领导权威,使造反农民敢于打碎旧势力、旧习俗的枷锁而成为无畏的战士.当洪秀全把“摩西十诫”改为“十款天条”后,太平军又有了严明的军纪.这无疑是太平天国初期取得胜利的重要原因.但也不能否认,作为西方基督教与中国封建主义“混血儿”的拜上帝教“并未从西方学来有价值的精神财富,反而造成了与中华有生机文化传统的脱节”,由此生成了太平天国内外的许多矛盾.这是太平天国失败的一个很重要的内因.这一点往往被人们所忽视,本文拟就这个问题谈几点看法.
