人们要求运动的机械另件有耐冲击的韧性又希望它表面有耐磨的硬性。钢铁在某一种状态下,很难兼备这两种性质。早有渗碳淬火热处理方法提高另件表面的硬度,并保留另件中心部的原始冲击值。这是一种普通应用的良好的化学热处理方法。但是渗碳处理变形量太大,是一个缺点,渗碳淬火后需要进行一次昂贵的费时的磨削加工。特别是齿轮、丝杠等的磨削不但需有专用机床,而且生产率低。对于形状复杂的另件渗碳很不利。
