Objective To explore the differences between clinical features and laboratory tests of hand-foot-mouth disease with viral encephalitis and common hand-foot-mouth disease and to improve the early recognition of hand-foot-mouth disease complicated with encephalitis. Methods The clinical manifestations and laboratory tests of 121 cases of HFMD and 100 cases of HFMD complicated by encephalitis were compared. Results Encephalitis group had more fever, high fever, longer duration (P <0.01), higher levels of leukocytes and neutrophils, lower levels of erythrocyte and hemoglobin than those of normal group (P <0.01), serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) than the normal group (P <0.05). Conclusion Fever and blood test, serum IgG test will help early detection of hand, foot and mouth disease and encephalitis, early treatment and reduce mortality.
