A new type of proppant is almost suspended in a water-based fracturing fluid and thus more effectively fills the fractures formed. The proppant is made of padded or resin-coated abrasive particles. The development of low density proppants in hydraulic fracturing is summarized. The role of this new proppant in increasing the migration distance of the entrained sands and more fully filling the formed fractures is discussed. The figure gives a comparison of two fracture cross-sections: one is to use conventional proppant to fill the fracture but only to form a proppant dyke around the wellbore; and the length and height of the crack filled with the light new proppant are both high . To date, 130 well fracturing treatments have been carried out in the western Permian Basin of Texas using an artificial low-density material called LiteProp.
