Bernard Malamud, who wrote some of the best long and short stories in recent years, died at his Manhattan apartment on March 18, 1986, at the age of 71. He is best known for his first novel, “dumbfounded man” and the movie recently adapted from the novel. Dumbman (1952) is a self-conscious, comprehensive collection of baseball myths and chasing the Holy Grail. Soon, he has some better works come out. His first book, The Magic Barrels (1958), won the National Book Award in 1959 and his best novel, Repair Man (1966), won the National Book Award and was honored with Pulitzer Policy Award.
