In the early autumn of 1961, Benjamin King, a World War II ace pilot and U.S. Air Force colonel, flew to the base in the Vietnamese side and the region. His co-pilot is a South Vietnamese Air Force colonel. Because of the language barrier, Col. Col. and his deputy seldom talked. Cabin is hot. Colonel Gold recalled: “The runway at the airport was too short and I could not land and had to try again.” But the second landing was unsuccessful.
