秋天是农作物收获的季节,尤其是根茎类植物,芋艿也不例外。其8-9月间采挖,去净须根及地上部分,洗净,晒干,其中间块茎状母根俗称芋头,旁边派生的小块茎称为芋仔,南京人俗称芋苗。中秋佳节、举家团聚,我国东南沿海有中秋吃芋艿的习俗。将芋苗用白水煮熟,去除毛绒绒的外皮,蘸白糖食之,清甜香糯。中秋吃芋苗既是民俗,又有讨吉利祥和彩头的含意。
