航天飞机是人类第1次把航天与航空技术高度有机结合起来的创举。它在由起飞到入轨的上升阶段运用了火箭垂直起飞技术;在太空轨道飞行阶段运用了航天器技术;在再入大气层的滑翔飞行和水平着陆阶段运用了航空飞机技术。因此,它能完成多种任务,兼有运载火箭、人造地球卫星、货运飞船、载人飞船甚至小型空间站等许多功能,有的甚至是一般航天器所不具备的功能,如释放、维修和回收卫星等。但它也有一些先天不足。因此,人们对航天飞机的评价一直众说纷纭。
The space shuttle is the first human combination of aerospace and aviation technology.
