卡里尔·菲利普斯是英国著名文化学者吉尔罗伊流散思想最精粹的表达者,尤其是其作品《渡河》被公认为是吉尔罗伊的《黑色大西洋》中所表达的流散思想的范例文本,也是菲利普斯流散思想的精华体现。二人均强烈抵制将黑奴与奴隶主、统治者与被统治者等一系列关系简单粗暴的对立,反对以国家和民族为基础的流散身份模式,致力于一种无种族的混杂研究,《渡河》1993年出版时,因身负刻意遗忘“非洲”形象和“美化”白人的罪名一度被视为是殖民统治的共谋者,质疑声颇多。但如果在全球化语境下加以观照就不难发现,随着大规模的移民迁徙运动的发展,流散群族与流散文学也得以发展。《渡河》虽然具有局限性,但作者所表达的超前的流散思想与当前的流散趋势不谋而合。小说往日备受抨击的方面恰恰应和今日流散文化之趋势,成为智者对流散文化的一部预言书。同时菲利普斯流散思想的形成也经历一个演变过程。
