古典诗歌意象艺术在其全面成熟之前,经历了漫长的演化历程。自《诗经》、《楚辞》以至两汉诗歌,随着诗乐关系的改变和诗体文学的走向自立,诗的职能与体式有着相应的变化,推动诗歌意象艺术由萌生、丕变而达致完形与确立。更自汉文人古诗经魏晋南北朝诗的代代赓续与迁流递转,其思维运作方式、情景组合模式乃至意象结构形态与意象语言锻造,均处在不断创新变革之中,显示出诗歌意象艺术整体演进的轨迹。只有通盘地考察这一过程,切实地了解并把握住唐前诗歌意象艺术的丰富成果,才有可能对唐诗所面临的时代挑战及其所完成的历史任务,有一个比较清醒的认识。
