《发胶》（一译《变发》）最初是1988年一部著名的音乐电影，后来被百老汇改编成音乐剧，大受欢迎。2007年，这个关于胖女孩特蕾西为理想抗争的趣味喜剧被再次搬上大银幕，票房大捷，成为一时佳话。
时至今日，不少女生还日日夜夜念叨着要减肥—而身处种族歧视依然盛行的上世纪60年代，特蕾西却对自己的身材毫不自卑，大胆地梳着和别人一样的潮流发型，从不掩饰她对黑人的好感。看着她明亮的笑容和快乐的舞姿，再看看你自己—至少你没特蕾西胖啊，连她都这么自信自强，你怎么可能做不到呢？

Edna: Look, if you wanna be famous, learn how to take blood outta car upholstery[座垫装潢业]. That’s a skill you can take right to the bank.
(Wilbur comes in.)
Edna: First the hair, now this?
Tracy: (to Wilbur) She doesn’t understand anything. Dancing on that show is my dream. Just because she wouldn’t know a dream if it bit her on the nose!
Edna: Well, I have information for you, missy. I once had a dream that I had owned a coin-operated
laundromat[自助洗衣店] and I came down from that cloud real quickly, I’ll tell you that.
(Tracy runs into her room sadly. Wilbur follows in.)
Tracy: …What?
Wilbur: Tracy…this TV thing, you really want it?
Tracy: With all my heart.
Wilbur: Then you go for it! This is America, babe. You gotta think big to be big.
Edna: (comes in) Big ain’t the problem in this family, Wilbur.
Wilbur: You follow your dream. Mine came true, and now I have the most precious[珍贵的] thing in the world – the Taj Mahal of joke shops (Tracy laughs).
埃德娜：不行。
特蕾西：但是，妈妈……
埃德娜：别挑战我的耐性，特蕾西·特恩布拉德。我的减肥药快吃完了！

威尔伯：特蕾西……上电视这事儿，你真的想
去吗？
特蕾西：千真万确。
威尔伯：那就去啊！这里是美国，宝贝。你要大胆想象才能成为大人物。
埃德娜：（进来）在这屋子里，大块头可不是问题，威尔伯。

注意到了吗？埃德娜的对白中有不少非常灵活的词组用法——例如从常见用语“get blood out of a stone”（从石头里榨出血，比喻从吝啬的人手里拿到钱）变化而来的“take blood outta car upholstery”，或者从“up in the clouds”（耽于空想，做白日梦）造出来的反义词组“come down from that cloud”。这些词组都能给口头表达带来相当生动的效果哦。

Corny: And we mix those kids in with the rest of the council!
Mr. Spritzer: Mix?! Those kids!?
Corny: That’s right. I said it.
Velma: This is not a Black and Tan cocktail注!
Corny: Well, why couldn’t it be? Velma, isn’t this where it’s all heading anyway? Now, you can fight it or you can rock out to it!
Velma: Maybe it is time for some fresh ideas...like, like a nice, fresh new host!
Corny: (sneers) Gee[表示惊奇的语气词], Velma, how do you fire Corny Collins from The Corny Collins Show?

“Speak for sb./sth.”是“代表……说话；为……辩护”的意思。“speak for yourself”是这个词组最常见的用法，用于对别人说的话提出质疑或异议，表示自己不是这么想或者没遇到这个情况，

Tracy: (sighs) I think I’ve been in a bubble[幻想] or something, thinking that fairness was just going to happen. It’s not. I think people like me are gonna have to get up off their father’s laps and go out there and fight for it.
Wilbur: (comforts Tracy) Your mother and I...we don’t see too far past our front door, but you see all the way to Schenectady. So, if there’s something you need to stand up for[保卫], don’t you listen to old dogs like us. We need to learn some new tricks...from you.

Mrs. Pingleton: (suddenly shows up) It won’t be where you’re going! The police are on their way!
Penny: Mom, please don’t send my best friend to the big house!
Mrs. Pingleton: Penny, hush!
Tracy: You haven’t heard the last of me, Mrs. Pingleton. Things need to change, and I won’t stop tryin’ to change them. I don’t care how long it takes.
