A tiny satellite weighing just 6.5 kilos recently caught the attention of the U.S. military. The satellite, called Snapshot One, is the result of the University of Surrey, which is well-known for its development of tiny satellites. When not deployed, the height and diameter of the satellite is only 330 mm. Star mounted four cameras, each camera than a two-pence coin even smaller. Surrey introduced some new technologies on Snapshot One, including mini propulsion systems using air-conditioned thrusters, miniaturized attitude control technology and advanced on-board computers. It is these technologies that allow this “gimmick” to meet other satellites and quickly snap up the rendezvous. Soon after its launch on 28 June 2000, Snapshot 1 took a picture of it at a distance of 2.2 meters from a Russian satellite and returned the image to the ground. The University of Surrey was intended to determine the “state of health” of orbiting satellites through “snap shots” of close-range shooting capabilities, identify problems with satellites and provide information to the satellite insurance industry and industry.
