Despite winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, the critics praised him while still staying in his early works of the 1930s, while his later works were mixed. By analyzing the Chinese culture in the two late works of Steinbeck, “Cannery Street” and “East of Eden,” and the Chinese image of Li Zhonghe and Lee, this article compares the two typical Chinese images by Steinbeck, Steinbeck’s acceptance of the Chinese, a shift in attitude of respecting Chinese thinking, and his courage to boldly shape the Chinese people.
