Smart or smart skin is a structural element that is particularly suitable for advanced aircraft and spacecraft. It is a networked structural element that embeds fiber optic sensors in a composite matrix. This is a very novel technique, but three are rapidly emerging: how smart skin works; what are the design impediments to exclude from making them smart and affordable; and what future smart skin may have.
