Eastman Chemical Company and Johnson Matthey Davy Technology Co., Ltd. (JM) announced on October 24, 2013 that advanced know-how has been developed for the production of ethylene glycol from syngas-based feedstocks. Ethylene glycol is an important industrial chemical and the basic raw material for the production of polyester for fiber and packaging applications. The new technology produces ethylene glycol from a variety of raw materials, including coal, natural gas or biomass, and is based on new, proprietary catalysts and process designs developed by Eastman and JM. Unlike other recent syngas-based processes, this new technology does not pass through oxalic acid intermediates. Extensive pilot test of new technology is almost completed,
