Overview Conventional carriers transport passengers through the hub-spoke network and charge higher prices for time-sensitive business travelers, making the entire industry profitable in the calm of the 90s. But these strategies are now being hit by lower-cost competitors, the growing popularity of online booking methods and the long-overcapacity of the industry itself, with the result that while demand is high, many airlines are unable to make ends meet. Airlines are looking for new strategies to deal with a new competitive environment. Three strategies in this area deserve our special attention: wasting in the dry operation; redesigning the fare structure and reducing capacity. These steps represent a complete rupture of strategies that have been successful in the past, and such a break is beneficial given the new economic realities facing the industry.
