Objective To understand the smoking status of medical students and its influencing factors. Methods A stratified cluster random sampling method was used to conduct a questionnaire survey on smoking prevalence, tobacco control attitude and influencing factors among medical students in a university from April to June in 2014. Count data using χ2 test, analysis of smoking factors using Logistic regression analysis, P <0.05 for the difference was statistically significant. Results Among 324 medical students, the total smoking rate was 6.7%, of which 20.6% were for boys and 1.7% for girls; smoking prevalence was 2.7% for clinical students, 4.8% for nursing students and 23.4% for other medical professionals; Students smoking rate was 3.8%, township was 6.4%, county smoking rate was 20.7%, urban smoking rate was 12.1%, different gender, professional, family smoking prevalence comparison, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the main factors affecting medical students smoking are sex, profession and home location. Among them, the OR of boys was 105.380 (95% CI: 15.562 ~ 713.574). The OR of nursing specialty was 42.711 (95% CI: 5.264 ~ 346.53) according to clinical medicine. The OR of medical examination (95% CI: 3.544-138.620). The reference value of rural residents was 6.829 (95% CI: 1.067-43.692) and the county’s OR was 15.388 (95% CI: 2.390 ~ 99.076), and the city’s OR was 8.650 (95% CI 1.238-60.433). Conclusions The smoking rate of medical students is relatively low, which is related to sex, specialty and source. We still need to continue to strengthen tobacco control publicity and create a smoke-free campus.
