Since the reform of Chinese education in primary and secondary schools in the 21st century, the length of the “Dream of Red Mansions”, a classic novel by the famous Chinese novelist, has been increasing in all textbooks in secondary schools. This situation is conducive to promoting the “Dream of Red Mansions” in the national acceptance and dissemination. However, there are also some problems in the process of compiling teaching materials. For example, the versions of “Dream of Red Mansions” and the author’s introduction appear to be lagging behind the academic achievements. They need to be updated in the course of teaching material revision and teaching practice. The proposition of “A Dream of Red Mansions” in exams and assessments should be consistent with the core functions and essential requirements of Chinese education, focusing on the core literacy of Chinese, rather than those of academic controversy. This paper argues that the reading behavior of “Dream of Red Mansions” should be returned to the essence and origin of reading so that this literary masterpiece can truly enter the inner world of students.
