Weeds have become a serious problem in Egypt’s irrigation and drainage channels, especially after the construction of Aswan High Dam, which has cleared the water and provided favorable conditions for the breeding of weeds. Since 1981, the Egyptian Institute for Channel Conservation has been working with the European consultancy in the Netherlands to study the problem of channel weed control by using cultured grass carp. The institute constructed a large hatchery with a total capacity of 500,000 fish fry in standard size to provide fry for the nation’s testing in the past decade. In order to protect the environment, in August 1990, the Egyptian Ministry of Public Works and Water announced the ban on the use of chemicals to kill weeds in the channels, using biological methods
