In order to study the impact of different skill levels of Taiji practitioners on human physiological responses. The physiological parameters of 10 high-level Taijiquan athletes and 10 normal-level Taijiquan practitioners during the simplified 24-form Taijiquan practice were investigated and compared. In the practice of Taijiquan, high-level group was found to be significantly higher in energy expenditure, heart rate, oxygen uptake and tidal volume than the normal group. In addition, high-level group in the inspiratory time was significantly lower than the normal group. The results show that the skill level has a considerable impact on cardiopulmonary and metabolic responses to Taijiquan practice. Different levels of Taijiquan practitioners may have different ways of practicing. The difference in this way of practice is believed to be responsible for the differences between the two groups.
