The rhetorical effect of Edith Wharton’s short story “Roman Fever” stems mainly from its unexpected ending, where Grace Ansley tells the story of another protagonist, Ariza Schreid, at the end: she Glitter Barbara, a bright and clever daughter, was born not of her husband, but of Alida’s husband. The unexpected conclusion shows the close relationship between ethical judgment and interpretation of judgments. At the same time, it also reflects the subtle treatment of the relationship between narrator and reader in the front, middle and back of the narrative process. By analyzing this process and gradually revealing multiple judgments in the process, we find that Walton’s strict controls on disclosure are aesthetically and ethically satisfactory, and even appalling.
