Fragile faults, which develop in shallow crusts, are often composed of a series of secondary faults. Based on the “micro” concept of rock mechanics and the “macro” concept of field observation of geology, a progressive connectivity model was established for the formation of brittle faults from microcracks to suture-like fractures to macroscopic faults to super-large faults. The mechanism of the progressive interconnection of fractures is analyzed, and the phenomenon that the angle between the fracture and the largest principal stress becomes smaller is explained when the fractures are wavy and curved.
