中国早期的绘画主要以人物画为主。花鸟畜兽主要表现在一些石器、玉器、青铜器、漆器、画像石、画像砖及其一些墓室壁画上。两汉魏晋南北朝时期出现鸟兽、花木绘画,在帛画、墓室壁画表现上比较丰富,但此时还仅仅是花鸟画的萌芽阶段。唐代中期花鸟画形成独立画种,也出现了一些专门从事画花鸟画的画家。五代时期是花鸟画发展的一个重要时期,从遗留的作品中看花鸟画已经提高到了一个崭新的水品。两宋时期花鸟与山水并重,此时花鸟画盛极一时,工笔与写意各有发展,在后期的风格演变中逐渐完善了花鸟画的审美体系。一、花鸟画风格发展的审美倾向
