However, in a recent renal analysis of patients, chloramine was found to cause hemolytic anemia. A study was conducted of tap water in Illinois to determine the effect of particle size, contact time, and dissolved organics on the influent concentration of the carbon column when using typical monochloramine concentrations in the influent. The resulting data provides a good estimate of the optimum design of the carbon column, but before getting more data, the dechlorination unit used to remove monochloramine must be carefully monitored to ensure that the desired water quality is achieved.
